• Compared with the Otto cycle, the Diesel cycle has a higher thermal efficiency, up to 38 to 40 per cent.

• At full load this is due to the higher compression - and hence expansion - ratio.

• At part load this is due to the absence of throttling, and hence pumping loss.

• Diesel fuel has 20 per cent more energy per unit volume than gasoline.

• On the European driving cycle, the VW Lupo ‘3 liter’ has a fuel consumption of 3 l/100 km or 94 mpg.

• This is achieved by refinement of a conventional solution, using an advanced Diesel engine.

• The Lupo ‘3 liter’ is in production, although the price is higher than for the standard car.
